Rowmark Junior Program Gears up for The Upcoming Season
Posted 11/14/2016 05:00PM

By Troy Price, Junior Program Director

Skiing is a lifelong sport to be enjoyed with family and friends of all ages. Our young skiers develop skills and create memories to cherish long after their racing days are over. Rowmark Junior Program’s highly qualified coaches focus on helping students build confidence, self-discipline, team camaraderie, and sportsmanship on and off the hill. Our program is designed to foster a lifelong appreciation of alpine skiing and racing. We strive to offer students a fun skiing experience in a safe, positive learning environment.

This philosophy is applied based on age and ability and offers a progression whereby skiing days and race involvement increase as the skier’s age and commitment level grows. With some recent adjustments to our development pipeline, our program now begins in third grade. The Rowmark Junior Program serves Rowland Hall students, ages nine through fourteen (third grade through eighth grade) on three teams, offering a natural progression of increased commitment and focus on competition as ability and skill improve:

• All Mountain Ripper team (AMR) - Ages 9-11

• All-Star team - Ages 10-13

• Academy Prep team - Ages 12-14

To ensure we stay in touch with and offer guidance to our full community, we are proud to introduce the Future Rowmarker program. As a Future Rowmarker, young student-athletes receive professional advice on local ski school programs, equipment recommendations, join our team email communications, receive a Rowmark t-shirt, and more. This program is a free service for Rowland Hall skiers from five to eight years of age.

We are thrilled that Hailey Duke has stepped up as our Academy Prep head coach. Hailey was a member of the US Ski Team and competed at the world cup level for the last eight years. Additionally, she competed in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Hailey possesses a wealth of experience, is unconditionally committed to her student-athletes, and brings an exceptional knowledge of equipment to the program. We also welcome two more new coaches to our community; Anna Jobe ‘14, and Lizzy Healy. Anna raced on the NorAm and FIS circuits and finished top three at J2 Nationals. She coached U14 and U16 racers at Flathead Valley Ski Education Foundation from 2014 to 2016. Anna now attends Westminster College, majoring in Public Health. Lizzy grew up racing in New England and competed in a variety of disciplines from USSA and FIS events to the Freeski World Tour, as well as freestyle in park and halfpipe. Lizzy is passionate about improving and maintaining our ski culture and a lifelong love for the mountains. Courtney McCabe ‘18, is joining us as a mentor coach. Karina Schwartznau will move up to our All Star program, and Megan Hanrahan will advance to our AMR program.

All Mountain Rippers

Coach Jay Sawyer reports that our All Mountain Rippers (AMR) team has been working hard building character and muscle. Through all types of weather, cardio and agility have been the themes this fall, as well as setting personal goals in workouts and on snow. We would like to send a special thanks to Coach Megan for leading our dryland training sessions. The AMR team also had the opportunity to learn about mountain safety from a visit with Frankie the Snowbird ski patrol dog. Many personal bests have been achieved this fall, and the team spirit is at an all time high.

All Star and Academy Prep

Our All Star and Academy Prep student-athletes had a remarkable six-day on-snow camp in Mammoth, California in June. Athletes have been working hard on their physical conditioning all summer and into our fall dryland training. The Academy Prep student-athletes train four days a week after school and were joined by our All-Star team two days a week. The focus was on cross-training and building strength while increasing aerobic and anaerobic capacity through circuits and weight training. These conditioning sessions provided a positive team environment, and team-building skills allowed athletes to strengthen  team spirit. This essential part of the program builds trust, confidence, and friendship. We are gearing up for our annual fall ski camp to be held in Sun Valley, November 18-23.  With winter just around the corner, we are eager to hit the snow at Park City and other local resorts.
