Jij de Jesus to Take the Helm of the Lower School
Posted 04/04/2015 10:00AM

Following Deborah Mohrman’s announcement that she would retire this June, the school conducted a thorough and thoughtful search process and, in January, offered Jij de Jesus the position of Lower School principal.

Jij (pronounced Jay) currently holds a number of leadership positions at the Town School for Boys in San Francisco, where he is “director of the exploration of new ideas” (STEM and innovation) and a fourth grade teacher. In addition, he oversees a faculty evaluation research and revision project, serves as a teacher leader on the committee on teaching and learning, and as the leader of school’s Green Team. Jij began his career in experiential education leading wilderness trips. He has a B.A. from Northwestern University in environmental science and an M.Ed. in private school leadership from the University of Hawaii.

Jij impressed us all with his depth of knowledge, his ability to connect with others, his intelligence, his humility, and his vision.  He said he “fell in love” with the school on his first visit. He continued, ”Knowing that I would be looking for a leadership position at the beginning of this school year, I approached the process not as a job search, but as a ‘community’ search. In Rowland Hall, I found the perfect community for me, a school characterized by support, kindness, and a dedication to continuous and joyful learning. I am thrilled and humbled to accept this position and join such a wonderful community."

Many thanks to the members of the search committee made up of faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, and alumni:  Susanna Mellor, Marilyn Osborne, Jazmin Olsen, Brent Larsen, Stuart McCandless, Kathryn Czarnecki, Lori Miller, Laura Hermance, Erica Keil, Adria Swindle, Christopher Von Maack, Carol Blackwell, Tyler Fonarow, and Jennifer Blake. This group narrowed the field of very qualified candidates to six semi-finalists who were all interviewed by phone, then to three finalists who each visited our school for full-day interviews, before offering the position to Jij.

We look forward to welcoming Jij, his wife Claire, and their young daughter named Lily to our school this summer.
