“Rowland Hall is a community of art making. In grades six through twelve, we're able to take young artists from their current level of proficiency and challenge them to expand and explore their visual horizons in many media. Of course, art is a creative process, but it requires context and structure, just as any other academic pursuit.”
—Rob Mellor, Upper School art teacher

Visual art, in its many forms, is woven into the very fabric of our students’ lives at school. You’ll see on our walls beautiful classical and contemporary works by well-known artists and delight to the amazing efforts of our children displayed in classrooms and common areas.

Dance is everywhere, from movement exploration in the Beginning School classroom, to impromptu playground rehearsals for the annual Puttin’ on the Arts concert that our Lower School children love, to the studios of the Lincoln Street Campus where fierce and animated choreography is being created to express our older students’ feelings about the world they want to change.

While visual art and music are integrated throughout the curriculum from the time a child enters Rowland Hall in preschool, art instruction becomes more formal in the Lower School. These children enjoy their weekly visits to the beautiful art studio on the McCarthey Campus as part of the specialties program where they learn technique, history, and criticism, and produce 2D and 3D masterpieces under the able direction of professional artist-teacher Kathryn Czarnecki.

Learning to play Orff-Shulwerk instruments and exploring music theory, history, and performance from the talented baton of Cindy Hall also enthralls these students as their interest in the arts begins to bloom.

Whether a student is just beginning to explore his or her talents or has already become deeply involved in an art form, Rowland Hall fine arts program and faculty are equipped to provide support and an array of opportunities. Taught by faculty who, themselves, are professional directors, dancers, visual artists, musicians, and writers, our fine arts curriculum and extracurricular offerings open dynamic doors for those who want to develop confidence, and creativity.
