It was an amazing fall season of Rowland Hall Upper School athletic competition as Winged Lion teams captured a record five Region championships, one team State title, eight individual state championships, and every team placed no less than eighth at their respective State 2A post-season tournament.
Congratulations to our talented and hard working student-athletes, as well as coaches Tim Sleeper and Susan Daynes (girls tennis); Stacey Camacho and Martin Ellis (boys golf); Mark Oftedal, Laura Johnson, and Rodney Kopish (cross country); Bobby Kennedy and Missy Tschabrun (girls soccer); and Lauren Carpenter, Kathy Howa, and Abeni Czajkowski (volleyball) on these accomplishments!
Several of our student-athletes received post-season recognition, with All-Region honors going to Girls Soccer players Megan Dingman, Liz Baer, Mariah Papac, Emma Carlin, and Julia Villar, and Volleyball players Sara Matsumura, Arielle Flynn, Claire Ausbeck, and Allie Zehner.
Boys Golf team members who earned All-State were Garrett Furubayashi (First Team), Sean McDaniel (Second Team), and Matthew O’Brien (Second Team), while Cross Country All State recognition was received by Sam Sanders (First Team), Donovan Murphy (Third Team), Astrid Lindgren (Third Team), and Megan Rasich (Third Team). The Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune will soon publish their All-State players in girls’ soccer and volleyball, and outstanding season performances by several Winged Lions has put them in the running for that honor. Katie Foley, #1 Singles State champion tennis player, was recognized as a Deseret News Prep Athlete of the Week following her outstanding performance at the state 2A Tournament.
In addition to achieving excellence in the competitive arena, several student-athletes were recognized as Academic All-Region for their academic prowess, including Callie Frey and Mariah Papac, girls soccer; Jonah Holbrook, boys golf; Sara Matsumura, volleyball; Angela Foley, Gillian Dee, and Sophia Nielsen, girls tennis; and Sam Lemons, Patrick Schloesser, and Donovan Murphy, cross country. The Utah High School Activities Association subsequently named three of these athletes to their respective sport’s Academic All-State team, including Callie Frey, Angela Foley, and Jonah Holbrook.
On behalf of our fall sport coaches and student-athletes, I want to thank our student, faculty, staff, and parent fans for their ever-positive support—you definitely made a difference! The Booster Club offered fantastic financial and “people” support, with parent volunteers staffing concession and ticket sales and volunteering to supply snacks and drinks to our teams—thank you!
I’m happy to report that the “Pride” is alive and well in Rowland Hall Athletics—GO WINGED LIONS!
