Endowment Fund

Rowland Hall is grateful to parents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, and friends who have supported the school's endowment. Endowment donors leave a lasting legacy and ensure the long-term financial health of the school. The endowment supports two crucially important school goals: increasing student body diversity through financial aid and enhancing faculty development through salaries and training. By funding more training opportunities for our teachers and providing financial aid to increase diversity for our student body, Rowland Hall's essential educational foundation will remain strong for generation after generation.

Remembering Sylvia Henricks

Rowland Hall lost a beloved member of its school community on December 13 with the passing of longtime second grade teacher, Sylvia Somsen Henricks. To honor Sylvia's tenure, former trustee and past student of Sylvia’s, Annjanine "AJ" Freeman Etzel made a gift in Sylvia's memory to support the school’s endowment fund. We invite our community to join this effort and make a gift in Sylvia’s memory to provide financial aid to a deserving student who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend Rowland Hall. If $50,000 is raised in memory of Sylvia, the school will endow the Sylvia Henricks Memorial Scholarship, and the scholarship would be awarded in perpetuity. Gifts in Sylvia's memory can be made by completing the form below, or mailed to Rowland Hall, Attn: Hilary Gibbons, 720 Guardsman Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84108. Gifts can also be pledged over a five-year period. The school also accepts gifts of securities. For additional information, please click here or contact Hilary Amoss Gibbons '96, Director of Alumni Relations, at 801-924-2985.

Sylvia Somsen joined the Rowland Hall community in 1968 as a second grade teacher and a supervisor in the girls' boarding department on the Avenues Campus. She was named Director of the Lower School in 1972, and continued to teach second grade while she led the Lower School faculty. In 1975 Sylvia wed the love of her life and Rowland Hall colleague, Alexander Henricks. She took a break from teaching in 1978 to raise her two young children, but returned to her second grade classroom for the 1988 school year. Sylvia taught at Rowland Hall for the next twenty years, becoming a favorite teacher for many second graders, before retiring in 2007, a remarkable 39 years later.

Sylvia will be greatly missed by the Rowland Hall community, and we are proud of the legacy she has left behind. Our condolences to Alex Henricks III, their children Alex Henricks IV '96, and Anne Henricks Crawford '00, and the entire Henricks family. Sylvia's legacy will live on through the many children she taught, those who knew and loved her, and the lives touched by the scholarship. We hope to you will join us in the effort to support the school’s endowment, and raise $50,000 to fully endow a scholarship in Sylvia’s memory.
