Winged Lions Capture Numerous Region Titles and Championships
Posted 11/14/2016 01:00PM

It was another outstanding fall season for Rowland Hall Upper School athletics as Winged Lion teams captured four Region 14 team titles, six individual Region championships, two State 2A runner-up trophies, with all teams qualifying for post-season competition.

Post-season recognition was achieved by several of our student-athletes, with All-Region honors earned by girls soccer players Emma Carlin, Caeli Kennedy, Airam Perez, Aislinn Mitcham, and Jordan Crockett, and volleyball team members Lena Chan, Allie Zehner, Emily Fowler, and Samantha Baneth.  Junior volleyball standout, Allie Zehner, was named a Deseret News Prep Athlete of the Week in October for her strong play on the court during the season. All-State for girls soccer and volleyball has not yet been released by the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune as of this writing, but we are hopeful that several Winged Lion athletes will achieve that honor.  The Utah Section PGA released the names of the 2A All State Boys Golf Team and four Winged Lion golfers were recognized with that honor:  Sean McDaniel, First Team; Jack Lang and Matthew O’Brien, Second Team; and Davis Porges, Honorable Mention.

Several Rowland Hall senior athletes were also honored for their accomplishments in the classroom as Academic All-Region players, including Lane Baker and Karyna Howell, Girls Tennis; Emma Carlin, Girls Soccer; and Kate Button, Lena Chan, and Amber Puri, Volleyball.  Two of these student-athletes, Lane Baker and Lena Chan, subsequently earned Academic All-State honors from the Utah High School Activities Association, one of only ten athletes in State 2A in their respective sport to be so recognized with this prestigious award.

Thanks so much to faculty and staff members, students, parents, and other family members for the great support they offered to our fall athletic programs—your support was an important ingredient to our success!  A special shout out thanks to the Booster Club who offered much appreciated financial and personnel support, with numerous parent volunteers staffing concession and ticket sales, providing snacks and drinks for our teams, and hosting end of season celebrations for our teams. Many thanks to the liaisons from the Booster Club whose behind the scenes work was instrumental in organizing each team’s parent body during the season—kudos to Kris Kokeny, Girls Soccer; Dorene Sambado, Girls Tennis; Leilani Fowler & Linette Baneth, Volleyball; Mary McIntyre, Cross Country; and Courtenay Porges, Boys Golf.

Our success was the direct result of the dedicated effort and commitment of not only our student-athletes, but also our outstanding coaching staff, including Tim Sleeper and Susan Daynes, Girls Tennis; Stacey Camacho and Martin Ellis, Boys Golf; Mark Oftedal, Laura Johnson, and John Bercaw, Cross Country; Bobby Kennedy, Scott Langone, and Bewar Yousif, Girls Soccer; and Kendra Tomsic, Lauren Carpenter, Kathy Howa, and Abeni Czajkowski, Volleyball.  Congratulations to all!

Congratulations on a banner 2016 fall season--GO WINGED LIONS!
