SALT LAKE CITY — Crossroads Urban Center welcomes Utah families in need to Rowland Hall, 970 East 800 South, from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 23 to pick up a complete holiday meal. Dozens of volunteers including Gov. Gary R. Herbert will distribute 800 meals on a first-come, first-served basis, and ID is required for all family members.
Each meal consists of a turkey plus trimmings: cranberry sauce, yams, potatoes, dressing mix, vegetables, fresh fruit and pie. During the event, volunteers and the public may also donate clothes, diapers, and materials for hygiene and wound care kits that will go to the Crossroads Thrift Store and Pantry for distribution on a later date. Hygiene and wound-care kits include toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, hand sanitizer, bandages, antiseptic ointment, feminine hygiene products and much more.
Crossroads Executive Director Glenn Bailey said that Crossroads and Rowland Hall have continued to collaborate on the giveaway for 22 years because it gives people a little extra help with food for Christmas.
“A box of holiday food can make a big difference,” Mr. Bailey said.
“It serves folks at a difficult time of year in a meaningful way, but more importantly, it exposes people to Crossroads Urban Center as a year-long resource,” RH Director of Ethical Education Ryan Hoglund said.
The giveaway has become a cherished volunteer tradition for Rowland Hall families and the larger Salt Lake community. The day-of volunteer positions have been filled, but those still interested in helping can donate to the Cross Roads Urban Center, a 50-year-old social service agency that operates one of Utah’s busiest emergency food pantries throughout the year.
Funding and support for the Dec. 23 giveaway comes from the staff, students and families of Rowland Hall, the Utah Food Bank, the Eccles Broadcast Center at the University of Utah, the B.W. Bastian Foundation, Rocky Mountain Power and dozens of other individuals and local religious congregations.
